Nano Fertilizer

SLINTEC being the leading nanotechnology based research institute in Sri Lanka has innovated a number of slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers using nanotechnology. We aim to reduce environmental pollution and reduce the carbon footprint of fertilizers through sustainable nanofertilizers.

Textile/ Fabric

With the help of nanotechnology SLINTEC has developed new fabrics and treating methods to improve the properties of fabrics. The inventions include, moisture management fabrics, anti-odour fabrics and near IR absorbing textile.

Value Addition to minerals

Sri Lanka is a land full of natural resources. A team of top-notch scientists at SLINTEC has invented value addition techniques which will increase the value of raw mineral ore.

SLINTEC has been able to develop electronic components by coupling Nanotechnology with engineering expertise. Reinforced rubber composites have also been developed for solid tire applications. Moreover, hydrophobic fabric softener has been developed to provide additional stain protection to fabrics.

Nano-lubricant

A superior nano-lubricant has been developed using locally available graphite. The product is to be used for automobile and marine applications in order to reduce the engine wear and tear, and improve the engine efficiency.

Ceylon cinnamon formulation as a nutraceutical

Ceylon cinnamon formulation as a nutraceutical

An anti-diabetic nutraceutical has been formulated using Cinnamon extracted from Ceylon Cinnamon bark. The formulation inhibits the activity against both α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes, which leads to conversion of carbohydrate into sugar. The product has been developed as a nutraceutical in the form of a rapidly dissolving tablet and to regulate blood glucose content.

A biopolymeric hydrogel facemask has been developed incorporating ayurvedic herb extracts from turmeric and nutrients essential for skincare. The results of wear trials conducted by SLINTEC confirms that the face mask provides radiant soothing effect along with rehydration and refreshing effects.

Development of phosphate fertilizer from Eppawala rock phosphate

A phosphate fertilizer is developed using Eppawala Rock Phosphate (ERP), a phosphate deposit in Sri Lanka. Phosphate extracted liquid fertilizer has been developed in order to increase the bioavailability of phosphate ions in ERP which then can be used as an efficient phosphate fertilizer for plants.

Abrasion resistance coating to protect prints on slippers

Abrasion resist coating has been developed for rubber slippers in order to protect the textured print on slippers. The wear trials conducted by SLINTEC have proven that the developed coating does not peel off, roll off or break off the print upon the application of fifteen abrasion cycles, as specified by the standard test protocols.

Formulating a novel herbicide using 95% pure pelargonic acid

At present, most of the commercially available herbicides are often toxic not only to the weeds grown, but also to the crop itself. The SLINTEC science team has developed an eco-friendly herbicide using pure pelargonic acid. The product is low toxic with low residual soil activity and has a weed control efficacy of 40%.

A wound dressing composite has been fabricated using commercially available active Sri Lankan honey. The dressing material consists of active honey impregnated bio-polymer which upon contact with a wound, absorbs moisture and releases active ingredients to the wound bed. The wound is treated via pH modulation, antibacterial and enzymatic activities.

Design of a soil test kit (N&P)

A soil test kit was developed to measure the content of essential plant nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous. Colour coded methods are introduced to determine the concentrations of the aforementioned nutrients in soil. The instrument is yet to be modified to determine the potassium level in the soil and use it as a N, P and K analysis test kit.

Development of a self-cleaning hydrophobic paint

A water and dust repellent paint has been developed as a self-cleaning paint which can be applied on walls, roofing tiles, etc. This paint can be specially used for outdoor applications.

Fabric Softener

Fabric Softener

A biocompatible hydrophobic fabric softener has been developed for cotton, polyester and cotton-polyester blended textile materials. A liquid formula has been generated using a metal oxide precursor based sol-gel method. Cotton and polyester fabrics washed using the hydrophobic solution has showed an average water uptake of 16% and a water repellent rating of 1. Furthermore, the formula has been modified to achieve higher shelf life.

Self-watering pot

Self-watering pot

The science team of SLINTEC has developed a self-watering pot which will keep the plants moist for more than two weeks. SLINTEC Self-watering pot can be used in both indoors and outdoors and the users do not need to fill any external water reservoir.

Seed card

Seed card is a special type of paper made with post-consumer materials and embedded with wildflower, herb or vegetable seeds. When the paper is plant in a pot of soil or outside in garden, despite the paper manufacturing process the seeds in the paper will germinate and grow into plants. Though this application is novel to Sri Lanka, it has potential market globally and can be introduced as a sustainable paper to Sri Lanka.

The SLINTEC science team developed a convenient and cost-effective novel strategy to synthesize nano-sulfur. The developed nano sulfur are less than 10 nm in particle size and its capability towards controlling fungal growth is more effective than commercially available sulfur fungicides.

Hydrophobic Glass coating

Hydrophobic Glass coating

A hydrophobic coating has been developed to be applied on glass surfaces, which can be used in automobile and other household applications (windows, cubicles, etc.). The product has been tested on several types of glass surfaces and accelerated aging tests have been carried out to evaluate the performance. In addition, this product does not contain any environmentally hazardous fluorocarbons.
